Portable Model Issue 2!

Hello all. Maybe you know, but I publish/edit/design a zine called Portable Model! The second issue is up now for a preorder. It helps me out a lot to do preorders (as much as I know the delay in shipping is annoying!)

You can order it at the link below!

Portable Model - Issue 2 — two flat press
Portable Model is a music magazine, mostly. Issue 2 features an overarching theme of interrogating the last 5 years. Inside you’ll find 88 pages of photos, essays, trend reports, cool lists and more! This time the zine comes to you without ads! Printed in black and white, but in a cool way. Letter

When I was deciding what I wanted to focus on in this issue, it seemed pretty obvious to talk about the first half of the decade. I don’t want to publish anniversary pieces and I don’t see a point in anything overly topical in an irregularly published print publication, so we go to the recent past. Some people have an aversion to talking about lockdown era COVID when it comes to music and art, but, if you want to talk about the recent past, it’s there even if you don’t say it. COVID underscores everything– this zine included. I got COVID and then pneumonia at the end of 2024 and it delayed everything in my life.

It made sense to me to commission pieces about fumbled returns to normalcy in live music and music videos. I wanted to hear about what it’s like to go from drive thru high school graduation to being done with college through the lens of the music that defined the whole journey. I wanted to hear about the 2020 albums someone might never want to hear again because they carry too much baggage. I wanted to hear about the venues and bands and fests that are gone or might be soon. I wanted to hear about lo-fi’s further descent into facelessness and alt-country's ascent into the forefront of the indie rock zeitgeist. I wanted to hear about the albums and tv shows that are the most worth everybody’s time. I wanted to get taken through the discographies of DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard– both prolific in their output and equally wordy in their names. I wanted to hear about where people think we stand and what they’re sick of and what they love.

I hope you want to hear about it too.
